Tree root sidewalk repair in Manhattan
Street tree roots are one of the most common reasons sidewalk flags lift and crack on Manhattan’s residential blocks. Pouring a new flag straight over an active root only starts the clock on the next lift, so the repair has to account for the root and the tree pit as well as the concrete.
When to call us for tree root sidewalk repair
- A flag next to a tree pit sits higher than the one beside it
- Cracks spread out from the tree pit across several flags
- The edge of the tree pit has broken away from the concrete
- An earlier patch next to the same tree has already lifted again
What’s included
- An assessment of which roots are causing the lift
- Advice on whether the work needs approval from NYC Parks
- Replacement of the lifted and cracked flags
- Tree pit edges rebuilt where they have failed
- A rebuild designed to stay level for longer
How tree root sidewalk repair works
-
Assess the tree and the flags
We look at how far the roots have spread and which flags they are moving.
-
Check what is allowed
Street trees are protected, so we confirm what work is permitted before we quote.
-
Rebuild
The damaged flags come out and the sidewalk is rebuilt around the tree so it sits level.
Why patching over roots fails
A root that lifted a flag once will keep growing. If new concrete is poured straight back on top of it, the same flag will usually start to rise again within a few seasons.
Street trees in New York City belong to the City and are protected, so work that cuts roots or changes a tree pit may need approval from NYC Parks. We tell you before we quote whether that applies to your sidewalk, and plan the repair around it. That check is part of every tree-root estimate from Nevora Sidewalk Manhattan.
If you own a one-, two- or three-family home, check this first. The City no longer issues sidewalk violations to those properties when the damage is caused solely by City street trees, and NYC Parks repairs qualifying tree-damaged sidewalks in front of them for free through its Trees and Sidewalks Program. The program covers one-, two- and three-family homes only.

Questions about tree root sidewalk repair
Will the City fix a tree-damaged sidewalk for free?
For one-, two- and three-family homes, NYC Parks repairs qualifying sidewalks damaged by curbside tree roots at no charge through its Trees and Sidewalks Program. Other property types are not covered, and for those we can quote the repair.
Can I get a violation for tree root damage?
A lifted or cracked flag can be cited as a sidewalk defect. One-, two- and three-family homes are the exception: the City no longer issues violations to them for damage caused solely by City street trees. If you do have a notice, see our DOT sidewalk violation removal page for how the 75-day window works.
Can you just cut the roots?
Not freely. Street trees are protected, and cutting the wrong roots can harm the tree. We work within what is permitted and design the repair so the flag stays level.
Will the same flag lift again?
It is much less likely when the cause is dealt with instead of paved over. Where a root cannot be touched, we talk you through options such as reshaping the tree pit.
